Radio Solomiya — how to create an online radio on WordPress with custom audio functionality

WordPress · Bricks Builder · Custom Development · Streaming Audio

Creating a website for online radio is much more than developing a regular information resource.

In such a project, the site should simultaneously be a streaming platform, an audio library, an information resource, and a convenient tool for working with a large amount of content.

This is exactly the kind of project that became Radio Solomiya — online radio dedicated to Ukrainian musical culture.

Task

The main goal was to create a modern website for online radio that would not be limited to a regular audio player.

It was necessary to combine several functional areas in one WordPress project:

  • 24/7 streaming radio;
  • convenient listening to audio directly on the site;
  • a separate audio library;
  • catalog and presentation of musical content;
  • section of publications and encyclopedic materials;
  • the ability to further expand content without changing the site structure.

At the same time, the site had to remain simple for the user and convenient for administration.

WordPress + Bricks Builder

Was selected for development WordPress, and the visual part of the site is implemented using Bricks Builder.

In this project, Bricks was used not as a ready-made template, but as a basis for creating our own structure and interface.

This allowed us to maintain control over the design, page structure, and behavior of individual elements, while functionality lacking in standard WordPress was implemented separately.

Custom audio work

One of the key parts of the project was working with audio.

On the main page, the user immediately gets access to online radio and can listen to the stream without switching to third-party services. Radio Solomiya operates in a 24-hour broadcasting format and specializes in Ukrainian folk, academic and contemporary music.

In addition to streaming radio, the site has a separate audio library.

That is, the site works not only as a radio station, but also as a catalog of audio content, to which the user can return and find individual recordings.

This is where standard WordPress capabilities are no longer enough - you need your own logic for working with audio content and its display.

Content part

Another important component of the project is the section publications and encyclopedic articles.

This fundamentally changes the role of the site.

Radio Solomiya is not just a place where you can turn on the radio. It is an information resource that can accumulate knowledge about Ukrainian musical culture, composers, performers, and musical works.

Thus, audio content and text content work together:

listen → find → read → discover new music.

It is this model that makes a specialized site much more valuable than a regular online radio page.

Why isn't the template ready?

For such projects, a ready-made WordPress theme often becomes a limitation.

You can quickly get a standard radio station website, but when specific requirements arise — streaming audio, your own audio library, non-standard content display logic, integration of different types of materials — the template architecture starts to get in the way.

At Radio Solomiya, I used a different approach:

WordPress as a CMS
Bricks Builder — as an interface building tool
Custom Development — for specific functionality

This allowed us to not adjust the tasks to the capabilities of the ready-made theme, but to build the site according to the real needs of the project.

Result

The result is not just an online radio site, but a full-fledged digital space that combines:

LIVE RADIO
24/7 streaming.

AUDIO LIBRARY
A separate library of audio materials.

PUBLICATIONS
Publications and encyclopedic content.

WORDPRESS CMS
A single system for managing all content.

For me, this project is interesting precisely because of the combination of design and development.

Here, WordPress is used not as a basis for another corporate website, but as a full-fledged platform for creating a specialized product.

What does this case show?

Radio Solomiya is a good example of how WordPress is not limited to standard company websites, blogs, or online stores.

If the project has non-standard logic or specific functions, they can be implemented on top of WordPress using custom development.

If there is no ready-made solution, it can be created for a specific task.

This is exactly the approach I use in my work: I combine design, WordPress development, and Custom Development in one project.
